Watch above: Huskies wrap up training camp

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies wrapped up training camp Friday afternoon with their green and white scrimmage.

There is no exhibition game for the Huskies in 2014, which could actually be a positive, as the team should be healthy when the regular season starts.

“Given the way we are, especially with our lineman, this is the way we had to do it,” says Brian Towriss, Huskies head coach.

“It was actually good that we didn’t have to play 80 plays against somebody else today.”

Towriss was happy with what he saw from the offence and defence Friday afternoon.

The same can’t be said for special teams.

“The guys back there catching the punts have been there before. They aren’t 18-years-old,” stresses Towriss.

“When you got guys that have played three years in the league, I expect them catch it clean, tuck it away, and do the right thing.”

Towriss feels the team has capable backup quarterbacks behind Drew Burko in Jeremy Long and Kyle Siemens.

He also singled out some receivers who stepped up, such as Liam Howe and Kieran Johnston, as well as former Saskatoon Hilltop John Trumpy, who knows the expectations are high coming over from the junior ranks.

“I think that’s where most of the pressure comes from for the junior players,” admits Trumpy.

“Realistically you have your two years. You either come in and help us right away, or we don’t really need you at all.”

Trumpy feels good about what he was able to accomplish during camp and Friday’s scrimmage.

“Fortunately I think I’ve been able to make enough plays where I put myself in position to get onto the field and from now on it’s just holding on to that spot.”

The Dogs now get a couple days off before returning to the field Monday to prepare for the season opener against Manitoba.
