LETHBRIDGE- Going back to school is something seven-year-old Emanuel has been looking forward to all summer.

His favorite part about going back is picking out his school supplies.

“It’s so cute, he gets to pick his stuff by himself and he’s so excited. He’s so happy going back to school,” said mother Emmanuela Nwaopara.

Nwaopara is a single mother and second year nursing student at the University of Lethbridge. She said it’s difficult for her to budget for her son’s school supplies. Fortunately, a friend of Nwaopara’s told her about the Salvation Army’s Backpacks for Kids program.

“It’s a very good program they have here. They don’t charge money for it,” she said. “If you are in financial need, I think Salvation Army is the best place to come and pick some stuff up for your kids.”

Now that she no longer has the stress of where she’s going to purchase her son’s supplies, and the two of them can just focus on his education.

The Salvation Army has teamed up with the Interfaith Food Bank and the Lethbridge Food Bank to help better equip students for the school year. Nearly 300 children have registered for assistance.

“It just gives the kids a chance to go back to school with new things, where otherwise their parents may not be able to afford it,” said Wendy Mouland with the Salvation Army.

“It’s just a great feeling, knowing you can provide that services to the community.”

Registration and distribution will continue until September 5.
